Hey listeners, I'm your host, Audrey, and I'm your co-host Terry. Welcome to the Voicast, your home in the Delta Quadrant for all things Star Trek Voyager. Today we're watching season two, episode 19, Life Science. Terry, we really are just a couple of conjections of photons held together by force fields. And we were before we watched this episode. We have always been, and we will continue to be. In this episode, the doctor falls in love with his patient. Paris gives bad dating advice, and we answer the question we've all been asking: Is the 57 Chevy still the go-to car for first date sucks? All that's and more in lifestyle. It is. Unfortunately, I don't have one. The rest is history. This happens to be part four of nine of the Sesca arc. She was a tiny little part in this. Yeah, they consider it a part. Also, I thought I thought we were further in that arc for some reason. But sounds about right. I guess not. This was written by Kenneth Biller, who we know very well. Directed by Clint Bowl, who I feel like has directed maybe one other episode. You would know. I do not remember that name. I would not know. I obviously don't know. You read them all. I and then I forget them. Well, I didn't even read them. Much information do you think I can actually protect into this brain? Well, if you're projecting photons, maybe not that much. That's so rude. That's my job. Terry is literally typing into ChatGPT. Give me more insults for Audrey. Smart ones. This episode opens with Tom Paris arriving late on duty to the bridge because there for some reason is this whole plot line, and I would love to know what um uh what is happening with Tom? Yeah. Well why this all feels so weird. Like, does he have an alien virus that is making him act out? Because it does not feel like the like we've been going on this journey with Paris, and I feel like he was getting more mature and accomplishing so much, and there's this random regression, and they're not doing much with it, and it's kind of annoying. Oh, yeah. And it's not even just a regression, like the amount of just not give a fuck that he's displaying right now is kind of extreme, even for Paris. So yeah, I don't know what's happening. I'm gonna go with virus, or he misses his um daddy, his I was gonna say his amphibian children, his alien offspring. Yeah. That seems more likely, frankly. I feel like he and Jane We should be in couples therapy right now, even if they're not still a couple, like or in the therapy. Yeah, so much to unpack. Well, I guess they don't have a therapist, but you think that like the holodeck could create you know, at least a Sigmund Freud. Okay, well, I don't know that that would be helpful in any way to anyone. Probably not at all. Um, I always loved when they brought that into next generation because I'm like, I feel like we're past this. Of course, it was data and he was being data, but I'm like, no. No, it's bad. Anyway, he arrives on the elite and rolls his eyes, and we have this whole, you know, everyone rolls their eyes. And then Jane Wade steps onto the bridge. So I want to know is she not expected to be there at the same time? That that's a good point. Um just, you know, trying to be fair with stuff, important captain things. I do, but yeah, we'll go with that. Maybe she was in therapy. I hope so. So uh Tuvok announces that they've uh picked up a subspace distress call from a small unarmed spacecraft with weak life signs and a Videan female on board. Yeah, so they decide to help a Videan, which ugh, but alright. Yeah, not a huge Videan fan. No. Personally. Um I think we've talked at length actually about how much we are not a fan of the Videan. A huge, yeah. They're just not my favorite. So they are in sick bay, and the Videan has the whole fucked up face. Phage. The phage virus. And but she also has some flashing lights in the side of her head. She has like a little Borg connector thingy, right? And the doctor somehow has like a like an adapter that fits my lap so hard. I was like, okay, I can understand like I can understand like creating one. We got an itchy neck, hold on. Yeah, like 3D printing an adapter to fit with it, but the idea that there'd be a universal connector. It's just so itchy. I know. Yeah, I know. They they had a universal adapter ready and they used it and um plugged her right in, and now she gets uploaded into the holographic array. I don't fucking know. Um, the doctor he says it's a neurocortical stimulator. He says a bunch of other Terry. We know this already. And space, we target them. And then he makes a comment to Kess that he's gonna download her synaptic patterns or whatever. And Kess is like, do we have room for all that data? And he's just like, My program is 50 million giga quads, and I'm smarter than everybody. I appreciated that. And then he said, Yes, of course we have room. Um, but only only for a little while. And uh she they do the whole like the fifth element thing here, which I thought was interesting. So they I don't know why they thought this was necessary. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about on the bed. They the doctor decides he has to, I don't know, do we need to kind of explain this before? No. Okay. What happens instead of her disappearing? Uh he has to like build her. Yeah. And for a minute there, I thought it was actually happening. Like I thought they were literally printing a new printing a new body body. That would have been amazing. And it would have probably Are we capable of doing Yeah, and probably that would probably cure the phage also. But the the doctor's point was that this body is deteriorating so rapidly they can at least save her synaptic patterns, and maybe that will help them cure her if they can actually talk to her or something. Yeah. So he he he's like computer bone structure, and then it's like bones, just like in the fifth element, you know, the beginning scene where they reconstruct Lulu. And then he's like, musculature, and it's like and he was like, What do you call the skin? He was like a thermal layer, and then boom, she's there. And I I was still like, wait, did they just print a body? And it wasn't until they had the whole conversation of like, well, you're a holographic simulation and there are limitations. I was like, got it. Yeah, it doesn't seem like with a hologram you would necessarily need to build it from bone structure. But he uh he is also able to put some fake clothes on her from her replicator, not rep the um the logs from the transporter and gave her make her clothes. So she doesn't have to wear wear she doesn't have to wear a weird bandage suit like Lelu. Yeah, I mean if she'd asked, probably could have. Sure. I mean, yeah. I feel like at this point in history we have all the different outfits that we can create. Very true. Yeah. I also just like the doctor seems so pleased with himself that he came up with this idea. And he like as she kind of comes awake, he's just like, this wouldn't have occurred to any other doctor. Like really in this whole episode, he's just really impressed with himself, which is adorable. But I was afraid there for a moment that he kind of just thought that making her into a hologram was enough and that he like wasn't gonna try to heal her body at that point. Yeah, I well, I think he made it clear at this point that he couldn't really like fully heal her. I think they talk about it later. He's able to give her like more time. Yes. Yeah, her condition's gotten really bad, and he can kind of help with that, but we don't have the ability to cure the phage. And as we know, my biggest complaint about the phage, other than the assholes that go around stealing lungs, is it really does not make sense that it's incurable as it is. Yeah, with the medical technology that they have, it's yeah. It just doesn't quite work. So they are headed towards a remote Vedean colony. And they'll they'll be there in 22 days, and Chicote and Jane. Yes, Chicote and Jane were talking about this, and they're like, Yeah, we'll drop her off when when we get there if she survives. And then Chicote kind of broaches the subject with Janeway about Paris. And she's like, Your rules, man. Yeah, go for it. He's your underling. You're in charge of it. He was like, Well, he's your special project, and she's like, Yeah, I don't have time for the shit. He does call her, yeah, her personal reclamation project. And I was like, I mean, they fucked to that. That doesn't seem to have uh helped, actually. So she's she's done all she can do. They are exes at this point, so it's kind of like eh, whatever. Hands. The doctor prepares to transfer her mind into the holographic body that he wait. What? That does kind of happen next, but we already talked about it. Okay, I was like, how out of order are we? Nah. You were yeah. Oh, don't put this on me, Terry. No, it's my probably I did it. I don't know. I was just really excited to talk about how damn proud the doctor is. We're gonna skip to uh this is yeah, he we basically jumped to this scene of the doctor cornering Balana. Oh yeah. And he's like, give me a part of your per parietal lobe or whatever it's called. Your brain. He's like, we'll just drill a small hole and I'll cut off a little piece of your brain that weighs exactly this much. And she's like, no, and he's no, and he gets really frustrated. He's like, just give it to me. He like leans over the table in her face and is like, just get in the table and give me your brain. Which is uh a huge ask, but also, do they really have to drill a hole? Could they not just transport a small piece of her brain? This sounds way more intense than it needs to be. No, unfortunately, they actually have to use a hand crank to my gosh, and then they stick their fingers one of this the middle ages. It's like the they have to go in through her nasal passage, actually. I'm like, I don't know. That doesn't seem very sanitary. Absolutely not. Um, but the the Videan has she has woken up in her new new form. She's back up, she's already been away. Yeah, she's she's been up, and she kind of walks in on this conversation that they're having. Like super hard. And I actually got really annoyed because she's like, okay, fine, I'll get ready. The nothing against the Vedean, but the the line they gave her where she's like, Balana, if you have any questions at all about this procedure, I would be happy to answer them. I was like, pretty sure the doctor just told her everything she needs to know. That's a little patronizing. Go the fuck back to bed. You don't matter. And it did nothing. Like, I don't know. Belana's like, okay. Yeah, that was supposed to change Balana's mind. That was freaking wild. But I would do want to point out that or ask, is this the first time we have seen a Videan who does not have the phage? That's great. In her holographic form, she doesn't have the phage. I feel like there was one early season where they weren't as affected. Where they they were like the one that was talking about the history of the civilization and how they used to be great artists and stuff. I feel like maybe. Maybe. But yeah, we've never seen a Videan completely cured of the phage. Not like this. Yeah. So I just thought it was kind of memorable. But also the reason that the doctor needed a part of Balana's brain is because he's determined that Klingons might be resistant to the phage because of all the time that Balana spent in their dungeon, which is part of the reason she doesn't want to give her any of her brain, understandably. Oh, yeah. The other patronizing thing that the Dean said was like, I can't even begin to imagine what that must have been like. I'm like, just go away. Bitch. Come on. So anyway, they grab a little bit of brain. Yeah, Balana relents. They get some brain, they graft it onto the Which by the way. Can I just point out that like the fact that this Vedian essentially commits suicides to stay in holographic form of later? Yeah. Is a huge fuck you to Balana? Because Balana gave her brain to science here. Yeah. And it just goes to waste. It's a tiny little piece. Tiny little brain. How many episodes of Star Trek could live inside this piece of Belama's brain? Probably all of them, I assume. Maybe she wasn't using that part. Big sigh. Well, the Vidin's name is Dinara, and they talk a little bit about why she's there, and she was, in fact, some sort of doctor, and she was trying to help treat outbreaks of the phage. And I'm still just very confused about how that happens. And how I thought they all had the phage. They all have it. I don't I don't know. Does it get worse somehow? I I don't know. And then the doctor talks about her synaptic patterns will begin to degrade in a few weeks, so they have to basically try and get her real brain back online by then. Yes. That that happens. We have this side plot with Paris and Chicote. And Chicote sits down with Paris very calmly in the mess hall and is like, What's up with you, dude? You're acting real weird. And he's like, You're the problem. You're my biggest problem. Yeah. He's like, You're a little bitch, Chicote. I hate you. And Chicote says, Okay, sounds good. Thanks for uh chatting with me. And then I feel like Tom, I understood a little bit what Tom was saying. Yeah, but then he like, am I excused? And he like huffs out publicly. It got really intense. And it also what he said was that he has noticed that Chicote does not trust his judgment and won't listen to his sh suggestions, and essentially is just like, shut up and do your job. And I can see that being the case and him not liking that, but that's something he could just go talk to Chicote about. He doesn't have to become a 17-year-old throwing a tantrum and do it in front of everyone in Starfleet. It was yeah, very intense. Yeah. Um yeah, it was a little bizarre. Which is why I think he has an alien virus. Yeah, uh that's an interesting theory. Or the writers are not doing what I want them to do. Um Dinara is a little bored. She wants to take a walk, and the doctor says, Well, we can't really go places where there aren't holo emitters, um, and tries to get her to stay in his office and read his medical textbooks, which sounds riveting. Right. And then he's like, wait, we can go to Paris' Bordello. Wait, I know just the place. Uh so I guess the bordello maybe just runs 24-7 now in that holodeck. Because everyone's in there all the time. I guess. I we don't I don't know if they have more than one holodeck. They probably have two. I feel like every starship has at least two. Sure. We'll just go with that. I I don't have the the complete schematics. Voyager schematics. Sorry, I'm not sure. I'm kind of surprised. I have those for the D. I don't have those for the Voyager. Okay, we can we can rectify that. Also, the book is um like prohibitively expensive. Oh uh well, there we go. While they are there, you get the distinct feeling that Denara is uncomfortable with physical contact or really even being around people, and she explains that like congregating in groups is prohibited on uh I guess any world where the Vedeans are, which makes sense, I guess. It's to keep them all from spreading the phage, but again. I thought they all had the phage. Yeah, I don't it doesn't make sense. Like she definitely had the phage, like she was completely phaged. But she talked about how it happened when she was seven years old. So she maybe wasn't born with it. We don't know. No idea. It's not really flushed out, to be completely honest. No, there's a few things I would like more information about. Um but I also zone out a little bit when we talk about the phage because I hate it so much. Yeah, fair. Okay, but then then she she has asked what his name is, and he says he doesn't have one, and she says, Can I give you one? Not this again. And she comes up with this is by the way, the this is even worse than the baby names that Wolfman was coming up with the other episode. This is worse than the name that the doctor chose in his one holodeck episode. I don't even remember what that was. It was like German. Yeah, it's always it never makes sense. Uh and so she comes up with Schmullis. Which sounds like a German name for like Bogers. Bogers. Yes, exactly. And he accepts this. He says he he likes the sound of Dr. Schmullis. Gag. He just likes it because he thinks she's pretty. Yeah, I mean, he may have just been. I don't does he have the tact to be like, oh, I like that if he doesn't? No. Okay. No. Um, she says it's his uncle's name. It's her. It was her uncle's name. That's even weirder. Yeah, we yeah. Can we dig into that for a little bit? Like, why would you pick an you're like literally given a blank slate to name the person that is a potential love interest? Yeah. You're gonna name them after your weird uncle. You're weird, he's gotta be weird. That's his name. Yeah. I and I also would have like wanted to know more about the person that I'm naming and not just like but I did start to think about that. I was like, would I actually feel weird to like date someone that had my uncle's name? And it uh it actually would not bother me. That's far enough removed. Already had the name in the case. I would not choose weird if I chose the name. That is absolutely fair. I would not choose Tom. Yeah. No, well, of course you would. Let's dig into that. No, I'm just kidding. Um this is so this is they're like having a good time together. Real sweet, and um they have a moment before he shuts down her program for the night because he's afraid that her synaptic patterns will degrade further if she's on all the time. She like sits there kind of waiting to be K. Yes, kind of hangs out just a little bit. There's a definite will they, won't they moment there um before she sh he shuts her program down, and then he just kind of stands there looking very confused, and I'm like, oh, the doctor is feeling things and it's weird. But it was cute. It was, and I thought, I mean, the doctor did a great job, it always does a great great job, but this is like him feeling new things, and that's exciting. It is exciting, and I'm happy for him. So he he consults a few people about it for some advice. Including, well, he runs a diagnostic on his program first to make sure there's nothing wrong with him. Yep, and he talks to Kess and then he I I can't quite remember how it happens, but basically she turns him down. Oh my gosh. Kess tells him that he needs to tell her how he feels um because otherwise he'll never know. And so he just blurts this out while they are examining her phage-riddled body. I'm romantically interested in you. Do you feel the same way? Yeah, I was having flashbacks to you know, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre episode. Oh gosh, he's like, I'm so in love with you. But also, Kess is right there. It's very obvious that the doctor has he has no idea how to do this at all. So it's very awkward. And yes, Denaro says we should keep our relationship professional, I think she says. Yeah, platonic. Yes, you know, the usual, just doctor patient. Doctor patient and so he gets real depressed and feeling your dude. Depressed enough that he goes to the Bordella looking for Tom Paris. Looking for like it was that bad. That's so bad. He's like, I came to you because I figure you have a lot of experience being rejected by women, which was hilarious. Oh, I love that. Paris like has to do a double, like he's like, ouch. And then Paris tells a dumb story about how his first love got super depressed when someone rejected him and it ruined his whole year. And I was like, this was like for a first date, too. I'm like, that's that must be real bad. I could see Paris being the type that falls real hard real fast with the idea of a woman and not the actual woman herself, which is gonna cause heartbreak. She ends up going to Cass at the same time. Right. And talking about her feelings for the doctor. And they have a little girl-to-girl chad. Yes. Then the doctor creates a holographic program with a 1957 Chevy. He uses Tom's program specifically. By the way. Oh, the this program has Tom Bears written all over it. Weird, weird, macho weirdly macho, weirdly classic car. Just on like a cliff overlooking an alien planetscape, like a Mars. Yep, overlooking a city with the stars. Like it's Was it a city? I feel like it looked like like an oil, like a refinery. I mean, cities on Mars probably look like oil refineries. That's fair. I guess you're right. I have been watching For All of Mankind, and that is kind of what the Mars city looks like. That'll do it. But I mean, if there's a 57 Chevy on Mars, then there could probably also be a city. That's true. I'll go with that. Anyway, it's very like high school makeout spot, and I thought it was super cringe, but um he's like, she just appears beside him, and he's like, I didn't know if you would come. And he like awkwardly gives her a bouquet of red roses, yes, a box of chocolates, and randomly a teddy bear, which I can only assume she has no idea what this animal is. Right? Yeah, she's never put eyes on this before, but it's he does just pile these things on her. This is so it's so high school, which I guess is cute for him. And she has been, you know, in this disease-riddle body half her life. So it's probably really nice for her too. Oh, absolutely. I'm sure she's loving having any experience at all, honestly. They she talks about the stars and he gets to show off his his knowledge of astrology, which I don't know why he has that. He has access to everything, you know. She's impressed, it works. They get close, they kiss. I wrote, damn it, Paris' program works. It was really sweet, and um we get to see the doctor in like a different kind of state of mind. The next scene, we get the like side quest with Paris, which is hilarious, because he walks onto the bridge late again. He's got like bad head and stuff, and they're like, Oh, no worries. We had villain name lieutenant take over, and he's like, You can't do that. He goes, he goes to Janeway, and Jane We's like, Don't look at me. This is all Chicote's on this. Yeah, Chicote's like, Yeah, we don't need you today. Which was very like ask your father energy to me. She didn't want to take any responsibility for that. Yeah, very and then he shoves uh Chicote to the ground. I can only assume because Chicote is huge, by the way. Yes, he strikes me as a very sturdy person. I can only assume he let this happen as a like example, but also like I didn't do right, yeah, yeah. I wasn't involved if this was all Tom. Maybe though, maybe if he has some alien disease, as you claim, it's making him stronger, also. Right. I'm waiting for the alien virus episode. What? If I am right, if I am right, that would be just hilarious. We're we're calling it, but that I was very surprised he fell over. That was not Yeah, I would have expected him to just not move at all. Right. Or for maybe Tom to fall over, Tom to like hit his head on his shot. Uh yeah, so Paris goes to the brig. Yup. And I'm just like, uh, I don't even care anymore. This is so dumb. Yeah, and in the background, you see Harry kind of shake his head. And I'm like, why has Harry not had this talk with Tom? Why have we not like he's obviously seen him degrading? Like, what's happening? Where's his friends and all this? I don't know. Yeah. I I'm maybe they've talked in a previous episode and I've forgotten. I don't they have not in my brain. No. Okay. No. It's in the deleted scenes. Yes. I mean, maybe it's it's a 10-minute conversation with and Harry in the deleted scenes. Just in the bordello. So this whole episode, In and Out, the the uh saboteur or traitor, yeah, has been in contact with the uh bad guys, whatever their names are. And we now know his name is Mike. Which of course it is. Yeah, fucking that sounds right Michael. Before he was like, I demand to speak to Saska, so now we have the scene where he's talking to Saska on a Zoom call, and Saska's looking fire and manipulating him so easily. And she's like, Oh, I think you could, you know, I was thinking you could sabotage the warp coils and maybe do this. And I can't raise a child with Kazan. I fully intend to take over Voyager, and this was maybe like a very interesting scene because we actually get to find out that he's having a different conversation with Sesca than he is the other bad guys. They don't know that Seska wants to take over Voyager and raise a child there. Right. I mean, they probably understand yes, we'll take Voyager, but not that we're gonna like live there. Make sure that he's gonna be rewarded for his traitorship. And in order for that to happen, he knows that he's gotta be talking with the right people. So he finally is, and she's trying to convince him to sabotage the war core. Great. They make this plan. So now the doctor's feeling good, and he's like, I'm on my way to my first relationship. This is fantastic. Now we need to do this transfer. Uh, but turns out that something's wrong. And brain graft that they used is being rejected because there's some other chemical in there, and there's a panicked moment of like, how did this chemical get in there? Who did this? Did Kess do it on accident? Of course not. Someone's trying to kill Dinara. Surprise. It's Denara. Shocker. Yeah. Could have called that one. It's a fatal injection. Yes. So she is trying to commit suicide. Kind of. I mean, mostly she knows that even if she stays as a hologram, supposedly her brainwaves will only last or sustain her for a couple weeks. So either way, she's dead, but she doesn't want to go back to this body. And she has a conversation with the doctor with a lot of reasons that she doesn't want to go back to her body, including the fact that she's like not helping anyone in her body. Like, even though she's a doctor, she is only prolonging people's suffering by letting them live longer with the phage, which is kind of fair. But mostly I think she's concerned that her body is ugly and that the doctor won't love her anymore if she's ugly. I what I kind of saw in the scene, regardless of how it's written, is someone that has been suffering for most of their life and has been given this injection of like life, euphoric life, and be able to see their true selves and experience things they haven't been able to experience. And they are so broken already mentally and emotionally that going back is worse than death. Yeah. And that's a very real thing. Yeah. I mean, she calls she calls what the doctor has given her a gift and says that she would rather spend two weeks with him like that than ever go back to this phage-riddled body. And she says that before they met, she was just a disease. People would look at her and just see the phage. And now she feels like herself, which is amazing. This is when the doctor says, before I met you, I was just a projection of I don't remember what photonic particles. Photons. Photons. And and now after I've met you, I am also a projection of photons. No, no, he's a real boy. I thought he was a real boy in the Viking episode. No, that was a fake real boy. Uh the end of the episode is really cute. She survives, she's back in her OG body, and they have a hair. Yes. Um, she will she will go back to this colony she was gonna visit when they drive by, so their time together is limited. But yes, she comes into a cleared-out bordello in her regular ugly body, and they dance together. It was it was sweet. Um Jerry, what did you think of this episode? Why? I don't the whole the idea that the doctor's program is adapting is what they kept saying, and that's why he's able to feel this new thing and fall in love with this person. That's not adapting. This isn't it's just making shit up at this point. And he's growing though. Adapting is probably not the right thing. It's not a good word for it, you're right. But yes, he is growing into more of he's more human. Which is great that he gets to have these experiences, and I'm happy for him. And I loved having an episode that was heavily about the doctor and seeing how proud he was of himself all the time, but I just don't I don't know. It was alright. It was boring. Oh, okay. Except that we got to see Tom shove Chicote to the ground. That's true. That's exciting. Sometimes we have episodes where I just I it's hard to really engage with it. Like, I just don't care. I'm not into the episode. This was one of those. I I agree with you. I think there's some really good, like, character development pieces, but overall, I didn't I wasn't really feeling this episode. Yeah, I kind of on a whole was just like this didn't need to be here. It felt like a filler episode, didn't it? Yes. Like, I don't know, I guess we'll do a bottle episode with some like character development. Yeah, we need to be able to put in these two short scenes. One that's about Parish shoving Chicote, and one that is about Mike talking to Cesca. And we just need to build an episode that hasn't it doesn't have to have anything to do with those two scenes, but we need somewhere to shoehorn them. Yeah. So one interesting thing is the ending of the episode was changed many times. Says Jerry Taylor said that they were trying to find something that felt dramatically satisfying, yet send out the kind of message that they wanted to be sending, which was like be honest and yet not depressing. If you get into people dying, it's a very, very tricky area. There was an ending in which she opted to stay as a holographic character and die within days because she'd rather have lived like that whole and beautiful, and only have a few days left, then go back to her diseased body. But we really felt that would be an irresponsible message to send. Yeah. Ultimately. I also feel like if anyone was gonna accept her that way, the doctor is the person, you know. I did appreciate. Yeah, I think the message was acceptance. Except for Paris. Don't accept bullshit behavior. All right, we are I think two-thirds the way through the season, Terry. Oh my gosh. I feel maybe more than that. Yeah, because we're on thinking it must be more. We're on episode 20 now, and there's like 26 or something. That okay, that's getting close. Okay, awesome. The next episode is uh season two, episode 20, investigations. Nelix searches for a traitor aboard Voyager using his using his morning news program. God.
